| fact, it's pretty gnarly. His first American album |
| is a grimy hip-hop soundscape that, like DJ |
| Shadow's Endtroducing, avoids the hospital-wing |
| sterility of the genre. Holmes loves airy cinematic |
| beauty, but he tempers it with frisky Latin |
| percussion, gritty electric guitar (a version of |
| Serge Gainsbourg's 'Don't Die Just Yet'), sound- |
| collage effects, and snippets of crazed street |
| people. It's a stirring symphony of sleaze. |
